FirewallConfig

  • April 2006

FirewallConfig is a GPL tool used to create and manage a firewalling system based on IPTables

Firewall Config LogoFirewallConfig was designed to help the network administrator create and manage a firewalling system based on IPTables (kernel 2.4.x and later).
Unlike other existing software products, this program makes exclusive use of the system shell, without there being any need to install graphic or web-based interfaces. In addition, the abstraction mechanism used guides the user in designing the firewall without him having to worry about the details involved in its implementation.

FirewallConfig is a console-based software that offers an attractive user interface through an Open Source software package called dialog, extremely widely used and already installed on nearly all GNU/Linux products distributed. It is a program that enables the console to display a wide variety of messages through the scripts started directly from the shell using the well-known ncurses libraries. The program was written in Perl and therefore requires the interpreter to be preinstalled on the system. It also requires the presence of dialog and the Net::Netmask module which may be downloaded from CPAN. FirewallConfig offers several advantages and novel features with respect to other similar programs. The purpose of the program is not to help the network administrator to write the IPTables rules, but to think about modelling the system in a more abstract way; it is console-based and therefore does not need a graphic server; all settings are saved to a setup file which maintains the program's high-level logic and which may therefore be easily transferred to other machines; it offers a user-friendly menu-based user interface; the firewall initialization script that the program creates dynamically may be modified and customized by the user at any time.
